Syrups and Sauces

In cooking terms, a syrup is any sweet liquid which normally is a solution of sugar and water cooked in different proportions. There are natural syrups also such as palm syrup and maple syrup.

Fruits, herbs and spices can be added to a basic sugar syrup to make flavored syrups which are used to enhance the taste of many drinks, such as coffees, teas, cocktails and mock-tails. Flavored syrups are also used in desserts and confectioneries.

Flavored syrups are available in the market, but it is easy to make them at home.

A sauce is normally thicker than a syrup, and used as an accompaniment for both sweet and savory dishes. Sauces can also have solid pieces of fruit, vegetables and meats in it. They can be prepared and served cold, lukewarm, warm or really hot.
